ॐ రామ - రావణుల మధ్య అంతరం
అరణ్యంలో రావణుడు వచ్చి, తన ఉద్దేశాన్ని ప్రకటించినపుడు, సీతాదేవి,
శ్రీరామునికీ - రావణాసురునికీ అంతరాన్ని తొమ్మిది జంట విషయాలతో పోల్చుతుంది.
అవి
1. సింహం - నక్క
(a Lion and a jackal in a forest),
2. సముద్రం - పిల్లకాలవ
(a Sea and a brook),
3. అమృతం - బియ్యపుకడుగు నీరు
(Nector - the foremost of beverages and Sauveeraja - a sour and sabvoury drink prepared by dissolving powdered rye seeds into water and preserving it for a day or two),
4. బంగారం - సీసం
(Gold and a base metal like lead),
5. మంచిగంధం - బురద
(Sandal paste and mud),
6. ఏనుగు - పిల్లి
(an Elephant and a cat in jungle),
7. గరుత్మంతుడు - కాకి
(Garuda - son of Vinata and the king of birds and a crow),
8. నెమలి - నీటికాకి
(a Peacock and a diver bird),
9. హంస - గ్రద్ద
(a Swan - believed to feed on pearls and a vulture - feeds on the rotten flesh of carcasses).
ఈ తొమ్మిదిటిలో,
సింహం, సముద్రం, అమృతం, బంగారం, గంధం, ఏనుగు, గరుత్మంతుడు, నెమలి, హంస అనేవి సత్పురుషుల లక్షణాలకి ఉపమానాలు.
నక్క, పిల్ల కాలువ, బియ్యంకడుగు నీళ్ళు, సీసం, బురద, అడివి పిల్లి, కాకి, నీటి కాకి, గ్రద్ద అనేవి దుర్జనుడి లక్షణాలకి ఉపమానాలు.
యదన్తరం సింహసృగాలయోర్వనే
యదన్తరం స్యన్దనికాసముద్రయోః I
సురాగ్ర్య సౌవీరకయోర్యదన్తరం
తదన్తరం దాశరథేస్తవైవ చ ॥
యదన్తరం కాఞ్చనసీసలోహయోః
యదన్తరం చన్దనవారిపఙ్కయోః I
యదన్తరం హస్తిబిడాలయోర్వనే
తదన్తరం దాశరథేస్తవైవ చ ॥
యదన్తరం వాయసవైనతేయయోః
యదన్తరం మద్గుమయూరయోరపి I
యదన్తరం హంసకగృధ్రయోర్వనే
తదన్తరం దాశరథేస్తవైవ చ ॥

The difference between you and Rama is the difference between
- a jackal and a lion in the forest,
- a ditch and the sea, and
- sour gruel and the best of wines.
The difference between you and Rama is the difference between
- gold and lead,
- sandal and slime,
- an elephant and a cat of the forest.
The difference between you and Dasaratha's son is the difference between
- a crow and Garuda,
- a water-crane and a peacock,
- a vulture and a swan in the forest.
